Does Oppo like toggles?

A few alterations made the JEGS panel exactly what I wanted.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

I am not confident in my wiring for this. The toggles only have two poles, so I wired the LED power to the toggle’s positive, and then I’ll go from that to whatever accessory that particular toggle will turn on. The fuse is between the other pole for the toggle, and 12v power. Oh and there’s a ground to take care of for each LED.

Does that ^^^ sound alright?

Okay... Questions. What’s the best way to deal with the grounds? There are six wires that need to be grounded, can I crimp ring terminals onto each of them, wrap all ring terminals on a nut and bolt and have one wire going from that to a ground source?

Also why do my crimps suck? A good 25% don’t work. Is my technique shitty? Are the cheap Amazon crimp connectors the problem? Bad wires...?

Lastly, what should these toggles control? So far for ideas I have

1) lights (fog)

2) lights (cornering)

3) power to air horn (I bought a fire truck horn)

4) low boost/high boost (eventually)

5) seat ventilation (future project idea)

And then there’s the starter button. I have no desire to actually use that as a starter. What could I use it for instead? Also I may try to get all accessory lights going to one switch.

You should use a combo of them as the starter. Flip 6, seat ventilation, then start.

It’s like we’re on the same wave length or something!

My first idea (and the whole reason I wanted to build something like this) was to have a “code” that opened up power from the battery. Say, five toggles, and they need to be “up, up, down, up, down” or the car wouldn’t start. Unnecessarily complex, but I may do it anyways

One of the rides at Universal has random buttons and toggles and knobs the whole way through the queue for theming. They all move, but most of the people in line look shocked when you mess with them. It’s great.

Crimp quality - crappy connectors won’t help (especially the kind with the very hard plastic on the part you crush) but the best thing is to use a real crimping tool - I spent a long time wishing I had a ratcheting crimper. It is worth having every time I use it

Wiring - basically you want that switch in between the battery and the Thing. If the Thing says “this wire goes to the battery” then put it to one of the terminals on the switch. The other terminal of the switch will go to one side of the fuse, and the other side of the fuse goes to the battery. The LED is simply tacked on top of (in parallel) with the Thing - connect the one side of it to the same post as the Thing’s wire, and the other side to ground.

Grounds - put a ring on each ground wire and bolt them all to something which is metal, like the panel the switches are mounted on. Run a single large ground wire between the panel and the chassis.

As always, thanks for the help! At this point I’m going to need you to sign the Miata....

I’ve got a ratcheting crimper, so what do good connectors look like? Mine are definitely the hard plastic kind

Label the starter button as “eject.”

Is it large enough you could use the hole to House an additional 12v socket?

For your extra switch maybe mount a power inverter in the car and use the last switch to control power to it.

Another option would be to mount one of the little 12v compressors in your trunk with a coiled hose long enough to reach any tire and run power through the switch. I did something similar under the hood of my old truck and it came in handy.

As far as the crimps it could be anything from poor quality connectors, a bad crimping tool, bad technique, or a combination of those. Grab a small bag of connectors of a different brand and see if your success rate improves. If it’s technique just keep doing it, and you’ll get better with practice.

It would be an honor!

This is a good variety pack (I have bought this exact one), though it’s a bit heavy on yellows (for heavier wire than you’re likely to be using):

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01GXQMP66/

This type has the bonus of having waterproof heat shrink built in - after crimping, put the heat gun on it and it will heat-shrink and seal to the wire for additional strain relief, insulation, and some degree of weatherproofing. I ordered several hundred more of this style crimp in the specific sizes I use a lot of, but the variety pack is good to have on hand for sure.

It’s also possible your crimper could need adjusted to be tighter if it’s having trouble clamping down tight on the wire. How that works varies by the specific tool; I’ve never done it but I’ve seen the adjustment thing on mine.

Don’t ever try to take that on a plane, people might get the wrong idea............ ok, yes that was weak. No one takes a piece of a car onto a plane. I’m tired and sick, me a break I’ll show myself out.

Your wiring sounds correct.

[+] ——[fuse]——[switch]——[load]——[-]

As for your crimps: Are the connectors the correct size for the wire? Are you using the correct crimper? Are you losing strands of wire when stripping?

Aside from those, I find crimping works best when the cut in the tube is aligned with the open end of the crimper, but YMMV. Professional crimpers are far better than the crappy stamped steel plier style ones, too.

An example of professional crimpers: https://www.homedepot.com/p/KNIPEX-7-1-4-in-Self-Adjusting-Crimping-Pliers-97-53-04/205944278

That said, solder whenever possible.

Mad respect for making some changes to get that panel exactly to your liking. Since I lack any mechanical skill, I settled for what I could buy that looked like it’d work.

Haven’t decided what functions will end up paired to which colors, though.

Was gonna ask, “why fire truck horn?” Then I remembered I also thought about how funny it would be to surprise people with a horn that in no way matches the car haha. Still can’t believe you actually got one! Also I am interested to see where you will put this toggle switch. It looks cool for sure.

Oh and does this mean you got a new alternator? What did you go with? (If so)

When I was a kid watching Airwolf and Blue Thunder and the like, I thought it was so cool how the pilot switched on like ten toggle switches to turn the thing on. Maybe you could, you know, recreate that.

If anyone is about to merge into me, I want to put the fear of God into them. Only problem... The 2 horns are 18 inches long and I have no idea where I can mount them. Oh, not to mention the sir compressor!

Same alternator, I’ll probably grab an rx7 unit at some point though. As for switch placement.... No clue. Center console would be nice, but I’d have to remove my heater face plate. Only thing I use is defrost so if I could figure out a way to par the heater controls down to say, an on/off defrost toggle and a speed knob that would be awesome and save a ton of space, but I’m unsure of how to do that.

I like your mentality. They WILL fear you haha. But damn those are big horns. Good luck with that.

Center console seems the simplest way, or between the seats somehow. I’m visualizing a few different ways... maybe modify the little compartment.
